Go to the doctor regularly. Seriously.

I just turned 50. I work out regularly. I eat relatively well. I don’t go to the doctor.   I was at the gym this morning. I had a major heart attack caused by a total blockage of my LAD artery. For those of you who might be wondering, I didn’t die. What I’m trying to say is go see your doctor at least once a year. Even if you don’t need to. I had none of the warning signs for this — blood pressure was fine, cholesterol ok, a few extra pounds but not bad. However a doctor probably would have recommended a stress test at my age that would have picked this up. Don’t be like me.

Glad it’s not worse. I have heard/read of many cases like yours in and around my circle . And these are people in the 30s and 40s!

But seriously good life advice. All it takes is a half hour blood work and a 1 hour appt once a year, same for the Dentist and an optometrist (If you wear glasses like me)

I’m a skilled shade tree mechanic; I don’t need to go to a independent or dealership shop.

I’m thrilled to hear you didn’t die because I heard Kinja’s new two-factor authentication looks specifically for dead people trying to create alt identities :D

Don’t beat yourself up too much about not going to the doc — I hear stress tests are rare unless you have family history or specific symptoms . The most common stories I hear about heart attacks are people in relatively good shape with strong vitals (several family friends in their 40s and 50s have dropped dead). The running joke in my family is that you SHOULDN’T stay in shape because otherwise your fitness will cover up other problems.

Not really, but there’s a kernel of truth to it.

Glad you’re still with us. Don’t be a stranger!

Wow - Glad you came through!!

I get a physical annually - whether I feel like I need it or not. I’m pretty much the same as you — just turned 50, slightly high cholesterol, though the meds contain it, a few extra lb, but otherwise in pretty good shape, other than typical aches and pains.

One thing I would add - get a colonoscopy if you haven’t yet. The prep sucks, but the procedure is a breeze. And it is not only a diagnostic tool, it can prevent colon cancer - they remove polyps which could become cancerous if left alone.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!!
